about
This song was written in 2016, the centenary of Ireland's 1916 uprising and Proclamation of the Republic. The number of homeless on the streets was, and still is, a scandal.
Aisling, a common Irish name, means 'vision', and refers specifically to a vision in which Ireland appears to the poet as a young woman. The DART is the Dublin Area Rapid Transit system, which goes all round Dublin Bay.
lyrics
Where You Gonna Sleep Tonight?
Aisling, where you gonna sleep tonight –
In a one-star room or where the galaxies shine bright?
It's raining now, so where you gonna lay your head?
I saw you walking by, you looked just like the living dead.
Last year I thought you only looked sixteen,
It's forty now, whatever happened in between?
You left your ghost town and came up to the city alone,
You fell between the cracks, and now you're selling Methadone
March on, fighting with a plastic cup
You look so pale, I wonder how you hold it up.
You have no bed, so what will keep you warm today?
A Proclamation blanket and a Tricolour duvet.
Maybe in Spring a door will open for you
If you stick around,
They're building castles in the skies
You'll see Paradise
If you're still above ground.
Night is hostile, hostel or a cold doorway
Or get on the DART, and sleep all around the Bay;
Hop into the Green, you'll be safe with all the ducks and flowers
And the statues of those who died for this great land of ours.
Watch the marathon,
It's no use to you
Running on and on
When your hope is gone.
